Obituary of Art Berner
Arthur George Berner, of Assiniboia, SK passed away at Assiniboia Union Hospital Long Term Care on March 11, 2023, with his wife Alice by his side, at the age of 91 years. Art was born on June 15, 1931 in the Verwood district. He was the eldest son of George and Pauline (nee Weiss) Berner. Art took his schooling in Verwood. He then worked for a local farmer until purchasing a farm in the Verwood district in 1951. Art met Alice Harrison at a “Threshing Bee” in 1952 when she came to Verwood to teach. They were married on July 31, 1954 at the bride’s home in Alida, SK. They were blessed with three sons: Lloyd, Gordon and Dale. Art loved the farm, his animals and always had a dog by his side. He also loved driving the school bus, which he did for over 30 years, retiring in 2001. Their home was open to all who visited. In 2008, Art and Alice retired to Assiniboia. He enjoyed curling, bowling, playing cards, shuffleboard, painting his paint by numbers, watching old western movies and playing ball in his younger years. Art was a devoted Toronto Blue Jays and Saskatchewan Roughrider fan. Art was a faithful member of St. John Lutheran Church in Verwood serving on the board until its closure. He then transferred to Messiah Lutheran Church in Assiniboia serving on that board as well. He was a Sask Wheat Pool member serving on the board at Verwood and later at Willows. He was an incredible husband, father, grandpa, brother, uncle and friend who will be missed by all who knew and loved him. Art is survived by his loving wife Alice Berner; son Lloyd (Dorraine); son Gordon (Linda); Dale (Joanne); grandchildren Jeremey, Sheldon, Curtis, Chelsey, Craig, Bobbie-Ann, Treyton, Shayla, Nolan and twelve great-grandchildren; brothers Arnold (Mary) Berner, Herb (Gayle) Berner, Ken (Sharon) Berner and sister Shirley Guidos; sisters-in-law Peggy Berner, Verla (Warren) Fair, Marliss Harrison and; numerous nieces and nephews. Art is predeceased by his parents George (1984) and Pauline (1997) Berner; brother Harvey Berner (2017); father-in-law Peter and mother-in-law Effie Harrison; brothers-in-law John Harrison (Elaine Senft) and Bruce Harrison. A Funeral Service will be held on Friday, March 24, 2023, at 1:00 p.m., at Piche Hawkins Grondin Funeral Chapels, Assiniboia, SK.
