On June 1, 2023, in the early morning hours, Bernard (Bernie) Shenher passed away peacefully at Ross Payant Nursing Home in Assiniboia, SK. Bernie was born on Oct. 31, 1934, in Bengough, SK. He was the oldest son born to Joe and Marie (Ruschinsky) Shenher. He completed his early years of schooling at Spring Mount Country School and his final years of education at Campion College.
On July 9, 1960, he married his sweetheart Gayle Conroy in Horizon. Bernie and Gayle took over the family farm, where they raised their two daughters, Gaylene and Celeste. They lived on the farm for 52 years before moving to Assiniboia.
Bernie lived life to the fullest and was very active in sports, with his true passion being curling. He served as the caretaker of the curling rink for many years. Starting in his teens, Bernie curled until his early 80s. His curling achievements included winning 5 provincial Elks senior events and representing Saskatchewan at five Nationals. During his curling years, when the road was blocked, he would walk 2 miles to the highway to be picked up by his team, curl, and walk back home late at night.
In his youth, Bernie also played baseball with Viceroy and was instrumental in getting the Viceroy Baseball team inducted into the Sask Baseball Hall of Fame. In his later years, he played Twilighter hardball, winning a couple of provincial championships. Bernie enjoyed many fishing trips, and during their summers at Thomson Lake, he loved taking his grandchildren fishing and, in later years, playing golf with them. Bernie and Gayle hosted a yearly golf tournament in June for over twenty years, inviting family and friends.
Hunting was another passion of Bernie's, and he was fortunate to have had many good hunting dogs throughout his hunting years. After retiring in Assiniboia, he was often seen walking with his dog Rosco. Bernie had a blessed life filled with family and friends.
Bernie is predeceased by his infant son Timothy, his parents Joe and Marie Shenher, his brothers Ed Shenher and Rob Shenher, his son-in-law Merv Guillemin, and his nephew Carey Shenher. He is survived by his loving wife Gayle Shenher, his daughters Gaylene Guillemin (George) and Celeste (Clark) Kwasnicki, his five grandchildren Lindsey (Mike) Herperger, Joel Guillemin, Amanda (Braden) Ellis, Nicole Kwasnicki, and Curtis Kwasnicki (Tamika), and his five great-grandchildren Kinsley and Bryson Herperger, Brynn, Zachary and Kabri Ellis. He is also survived by his sisters Marlene Tansley and Deb Nicholson, as well as numerous in-laws nieces and nephews.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff at Ross Payant for their loving care of Bernie, Dad, and Grandpa.
A Funeral Service will be held on Monday, June 26, 2023 @ 2:00 pm at St. George Roman Catholic Church, Assiniboia, SK. Memorial donations in Bernie's memory can be given to the Assiniboia Auxiliary for Long Term Care Homes for the Ross Payant Staff, Box 454 Assiniboia, SK S0H 0B0
