Obituary of Georgina Loverin

Georgina Loverin of Swift Current, formerly of Hazenmore, passed away peacefully at the age of 88, surrounded by her loving family, on October 3, 2023 at Cypress House in Swift Current, SK.  She was born on a farm west of Mankota, in the Billimun area, on July 12, 1935 to Gabe and Veronica Silbernagel, the eldest of five children.  Georgina lived on the farm until she was seven years old, at which time her parents moved to Mankota and her dad started a trucking business.  She spoke only German when she started school.

Georgina married Dale Loverin on March 15, 1952, at St. Alberts Church in Mankota. That year there was a lot of snow and when it began to melt it washed out some of the bridges, so for a while, no one was able to leave or come into Mankota.  Their wedding dance was delayed until April.

They moved to Trewdale where Dale worked as an elevator agent for Sask Wheat Pool. Life in Trewdale was not easy, as they didn’t have electricity, running water, or any of the conveniences we take for granted nowadays.  They made many new friends and lived there for five years.  Their three sons; Ron, Grant, and Gary, were born during this time. Dale and Georgina returned to the family farm north of Hazenmore in the spring of 1957 and bought the land in 1959.  The first few years were very disappointing as they were hailed out two years out of the first three.  The first year Dale and his dad were on their way to Kincaid to buy a new combine but saw there was a storm coming. They turned around as Georgina was home alone with the children. Every window on the west side of the house was broken by the hail.  They were tramping in the glass, hail, and water trying to clean up the mess.  Needless to say, they no longer needed a combine. When Dale and Georgina finally got their first granary full of wheat, they thought they were rich!  They also raised pigs, chickens and cattle.  For a number of years, they rented a house in town for the winter months and moved back to the farm in the spring. In 1967 they bought a house in Hazenmore and farmed from there. All three boys eventually moved home to raise their families and farm with Dale and Georgina.  

Georgina worked at the Hazenmore Coop for many years. She loved working at the store; visiting with patrons, organizing the shelves in an appealing and effective manner, and sharing many laughs with coworkers.  Georgina was a member of the Hazenmore Community Club, Club 29, Bridge Club and the Birthday Club.  She enjoyed bowling, curling, golfing, gardening, pickling, flowers, crocheting, and she especially loved playing cards and visiting with family and friends.  Georgina had good taste and decorated her home invitingly. She was a welcoming host to numerous friends and family, with overnight stays by many.  Georgina was excited when grandchildren arrived and enjoyed having them for sleepovers. “Grandma and Grandpa’s” house became an important and regular stop for the grandchildren. She provided many a delicious meal for her family and no one will replace her fried chicken and homemade buns. 

Georgina and Dale enjoyed many camping trips to Emma Lake with Art and Rene Froyman. In winter months they travelled to warmer climates, enjoying Hawaii, the USA and the Bahamas with friends and family. Dale passed away on October 28, 2010.  In 2013 Georgina decided to move into Swift Current, as many of her dear friends and grand ladies of Hazenmore were already gone. She first purchased a condo and then moved into the Bentley in 2020. Georgina was thankful to have a wonderful group of friends with whom to play canasta, whist and bridge.  She had many treasured friends and family who included her in their lives regularly and brought her great joy.  Wally Roen became a dear friend who visited her often and continued to do so daily as her health declined. Georgina endured congestive heart disease, cancer, and macular degeneration.

Georgina was kind, generous, patient, funny, smart, and stylish; her beautiful clothes and jewelry were fabulous.  Georgina cherished visits from family and enjoyed catching up with our lives. These visits included the signature Gina hugs and kisses with children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, and extended family. Her memory was incredible all her life.  Georgina recognized everyone by name; she remembered events, dates and years easily and accurately. We will miss our family historian and matriarch dearly.

Georgina was predeceased by her husband Dale, her son Ron, her parents Gabe and Veronica Silbernagel, her mothers-in-law Pearl and Margaret Loverin, and father-in-law John Loverin, numerous sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, aunts, uncles, and a niece.  She is survived by her daughter-in-law Kathy, son Grant (Laura), son Gary (Cheryl), 9 grandchildren, and 19 great grandchildren. Georgina is also survived by her sister Lorraine Highsaw, brothers Laurie Silbernagel(Carole) and Wayne Silbernagel(Pat), and sister Janice(Don) Orschy, and numerous nieces and nephews. 

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Friday, November 10, 2023 at 11:00 a.m. at Christ the Redeemer Parish, 1850 Springs Gate, Swift Current, SK. Donations in memory of Georgina can be made to the Hazenmore Cemetery, Box 36 Hazenmore, SK S0N 1C0.
