Obituary of Gloria Douglass
On November 3, 2023, Gloria Elaine Douglass at 94 years of age was guided home safely with the love of her family in closeness and afar. Born May 11, 1929, to John and Sadie (McMillan) Fisher in Shaunavon Saskatchewan Gloria championed her life with purpose and meaning. Gloria’s beloved husband Bill (WT) Douglass predeceased (February 1, 2016) shared an amazing 66 years together experiencing many memorable moments. Family was her greatest joy and over the years her four children Brent, Barry, Barb, and Deed helped expand this joy. Delight and love for her daughter-in-law Sue, son-in-law Bernie, 12 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren fulfilled Gloria’s love of family. Gloria’s lasting legacy leaves, Brent & family: grandsons, Jory Douglass, great-granddaughter Scarlett, Scott Douglass (Kelsey) great-granddaughters Sophie and Isla, grandson Michael (Crystal, deceased), and granddaughter Stephanie (Cody Tessier) great-grandson Blaise, great-granddaughter Harley, great-grandsons Bowan & Rylan. Barry, Sue & family: grandson Tom (Andrea) great-grandson George, granddaughter Carlie (Wes Murray) great-granddaughter Sophia, and grandson Andrew (Alex). Barb & family: grandsons Riley (Stephanie), Rory (Hannah) great-grandson Oakley, and granddaughter McMillan (Rylan James) great-grandsons York & Harlow. Deed, Bernie & family: granddaughters Madison (Coltan and his two children, Thomas and Ciara), great-grandson Dunham, McKenzie (Jason Haubrich) great-granddaughters Remy & Scotti.
Gloria’s early years were spent bonding an unbreakable connection with her siblings, their life partners, and children. Sadly, Gloria felt the loss of her brother Jack, sisters Norma, Betty (Frank), Flo (Ginger), Cherry (Chuck), and Audrey (Ted) which left a deep hole in her heart. Gloria’s family grew with the joining of Bill’s sister Hazel (Henry) and brother Gerry (Eldora). She truly cherished the relationships she had with her nephews Laurie, Mick, Jack, Greg, Mike, Dean, Ricci and nieces Leigh-Anne, Jodie, Terry, Kate, Karen, Nancy, Crystal, and all of their families.
Aside from being a daughter, wife, mother, sister, aunt, friend, Gloria, found her calling and passion in nursing. Graduating in 1949 as an RN from the Moose Jaw Grey Nun’s Hospital and honored with the designation of ‘Bedside Nursing’, she continued to comfort, heal, and encourage all those in her care. In the late 1960’s she became a public health nurse and served the surrounding area with incredible compassion. Many young moms felt her comfort and many young kids felt her needles!!
As a woman born in the dirty thirties, she valued community, caring for others, offering hospitality through her love of feeding hoards of people and housing anyone who graced her home. She was always down for a good game of cards! She treasured her many friendships. Minnie her dearest and longest friend who together, raised their children, made costumes, baked, curled, travelled, and laughed till the tears ran down their cheeks are beautiful memories.
Words from Gloria’s family help celebrate this wonderful lady…
“Two words- style and class!” “I have always been proud to have a grandmother who forged the workforce in a time when working outside the home wasn’t the norm. Grandma always encouraged us to pursue our passions, whatever they might be. She loved to have fun and loved when others did too.”
“I’ll miss hearing the kitchen floorboards squeak early in the mornings, signalling Gramma was awake and ready to serve her world-class cinnamon buns.” “Gram was a die-hard Blue Jays fan, who rarely missed a game, and I could always have a great phone chat on the teams’ latest achievements.”
“We got her home safely”
“Aunt Gloria always welcomed us in her home and heart. She was our supporter, teacher, and friend, always there with a hug or word of encouragement.” “We thank Aunt Gloria for being a gracious hostess and for teaching us the importance of family, food, and fun!”.
