Obituary of Glenn Mayo
It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Glenn Wesley Mayo on July 27, 2024, at Dr. F.H. Wigmore Hospital in Moose Jaw, SK. Glenn was born July 12, 1943, in Kincaid, SK to Frank and Gladys (Elliott) Mayo. He began his education in Hazenmore and completed his schooling in Kincaid. His time spent outside school at local garages in town sparked his lifelong passion for mechanics, an interest and talent that would serve Glenn well. In 1961, Glenn began working at Frostad’s Garage, where he pursued further education at the Saskatchewan Technical Institute to become a journeyman mechanic.
In 1964, he married Diane Monette of Meyronne. They were blessed with four children: George, Jerry, Leanne, and Jenny. The couple moved to Calgary for a period but returned to Kincaid after the passing of Glenn’s father to help his mother with the family farm. From 1969 to 1971, Glenn and Diane custom combined in the U.S. alongside Diane’s father, a period he remembered fondly.
In the fall of 1973, Glenn and Diane purchased the farm northwest of Hazenmore, where they expanded their farming operation over the years. Glenn’s dedication to his family and farm was evident in everything he did, and he remained a pillar of strength for those around him. He devoted his life to farming and raised a family on the farm northwest Hazenmore until 2020, when he and Diane purchased their acreage in Moose Jaw in order to be closer to hospitals during Diane’s illness and recovery. Glenn enjoyed their new home and yard there, caring for the grounds and pausing for coffee on their deck amidst the trees. His passion for vehicles continued throughout retirement. Being in the Golden Age would not slow him down, as evident by his new favourite Dodge Challenger Hellcat and the new garage addition to house his “toys.” Even at the age of 81, he enjoyed his nightly cruises and the feeling of an open road at the wheel of his favourite car.
Glenn is survived by his wife of nearly 60 years, Diane Mayo (Monette), his sons George (Sonya) Mayo and Jerry Mayo, daughters Leanne (Richard) Mann and Jenny Mayo, his grandson Jordan Mann, and granddaughters Janelle, Shantelle, Justyne, and Kristyne Mayo.
He will be deeply missed and remembered by all who knew him. His sly smile always let you know what he was thinking. His quick wit, his expressions, his love to tease and his ability to find humour in any situation will be cherished by all who knew him. Glenn was a loving Grandpa, a proud father, a devoted husband, and a trusted friend and neighbour. He was a gifted mechanic, welder and machinist; He loved the land and the outdoors, from farming to flying; With patience and drive, and an unwavering will to never give up, his labours of love created a home, a family, and a legacy of farm tradition and values.
Glenn will be reunited in heaven with his parents, Frank and Gladys (Elliot) Mayo, his Uncle Lloyd Elliot, Aunt Iris (Stanley) Bell, and his treasured granddaughter Jaycena Mann.
A Service of Remembrance was held on Thursday, August 1, 2024, at 2:00 p.m. at the Hazenmore Community Hall, with Sam Hawkins officiating. The scripture readers were Justyne and Kristyne Mayo.
