Obituary of Bud Peter
Edwin Clarence "Bud” Peter of Woodrow, SK, passed away on Saturday, June 14, 2014, at the age of 85 years. Bud was born in Gravelbourg, SK on May 5, 1929. He was the youngest of seven children born to Edward and Emily (nee Engel) Peter. Bud attended school in Woodrow, SK, until grade ten. He then moved with his parents to Enderby, BC. He worked at a hardware store there for two years. He then worked for the CPR for a few months while living in Penticton, BC. Next, Bud moved to Princeton, BC where he became a fireman for the CPR. His job as a fireman took him to Broodmare and later Revelstoke. In the early 1950’s, Bud moved back to Woodrow and became a helper at Patterson Elevator. After a few months Bud moved to Tugaske, SK as the Patterson grain buyer. He then bought grain for a short while in Mazenod before moving back to Woodrow. On August 1, 1957, Bud became the Searle Grain Buyer at Woodrow. Searle was eventually bought out by Federal Grain and later Sask. Wheat Pool. Bud married Jeanette Filson on August 5, 1959, at the United Church in Woodrow. Bud and Jeanette were blessed with three children, Doug, Julianne and Naomi, and they made their home in Woodrow. When Bud’s brother, Lawrence, left Woodrow in 1961, Bud purchased his farm and the family moved to this farm north of town. In 1974, a new house was built with all of the amenities. Bud and his family farmed the land, and Bud also remained the grain buyer in Woodrow until he retired in 1989. Bud loved the solitude and freedom of his farm, and remained active in the farming operation until he was no longer able to drive. Bud enjoyed visiting and took pleasure in the company of his family and friends. He was a gifted and gracious host, and always made people feel welcome in his home. Bud had a good voice for singing, and was recruited to join Herb and the Hammers. This group had a lot of fun performing together at special occasions, such as reunions. Bud enjoyed bowling, curling and golf, and liked to watch hockey and football. Bud was a loyal Woodrow Hawk fan, and could always be found in the goal judge box at the far end of the rink. He also became a faithful fan of the Lafleche Flyers and the Assiniboia Jr. B. Rebels. Bud was proud to make the trip, by bus, to the 1989 Grey Cup in Toronto, and was excited to witness the Riders win in the last moments of the game. Sadly, the last championship he was able to watch his Toronto Maple Leafs win was in 1967. Bud loved reading the newspaper, and could often be found reading the Prairie Trade and Post or the Regina Leader Post. He also enjoyed playing cards, and some of his favorite games where cribbage and shanghai. Bud was a kind and generous man, and his spirit will continue to live on through his children and those who knew him. Bud is survived by his wife of 54 years, Jeanette (nee Filson) Peter; son Doug (Loretta) Peter, grandson Lyle Peter; daughter Julianne Gibson, grandchildren Riley Gibson, Tanner Gibson; daughter Naomi (Jeff) Berg, grandchildren Kaleb Berg, Daviney Berg; brothers-in-law Harvey (Linda) Filson, David (Linda) Filson, William Filson, Ben (Sandy) Filson, Duane (Penny) Filson. Predeceased by his parents Edward and Emily (nee Engel) Peter; brothers Lawrence (Clara) Peter, Wilbert (June) Peter; sisters Elsie Peter, Lydia (Erven) Seibel, Esther (John) Markin, Mildred (Tom) Skyrme; sister-in-law Sharon Filson. Celebration of Life was held on Thursday, June 19, 2014, at 2:30 p.m., at Piche-Hawkins-Grondin Funeral Chapel, Assiniboia, SK, with Reverend Linda Tomlinson-Seebach officiant. The eulogy was shared by Duane Filson. Readers were Harvey Filson and David Filson. The Old Farmer’s Prayer was read by Ben Filson. Music was shared by Duane and Penny Filson.
