Cub Car n' More

When I was in Cub Scouts (aka Cubs) in Grande Cache, I remember dad being one of my Cub leaders. He helped me earn so many badges my sleeves were covered! The best memory I have of dad and Cubs is, the Cub Car Races held once a year. We would build our cars with our dads and race them down a cool looking twisting, turning, and looping track. I was in Cubs for a few years and dad helped me (or I helped him) build some of the neatest cars. Dad was a car enthusiast and loved being my Cub leader. One of the cars he helped me with had bullets for headlights. He took apart two of his .22 rounds, drilled two holes in the front of the car and I glued the bullets in place. Dad then helped shape the back end a bit to make it look really neat. (“Cool wasn’t in my vocabulary back then, so everything dad did with Cubs was really neat). I remember seeing a newspaper photo of us with my car, but I do not remember what it was about, nor do I know what happened to the newspaper cut-out.

Dad and I did many really neat things during my time in Cubs. We went on Cub Camps several times a year. He was the one who taught me how to pitch a lean-to and tie knots. (However, every father should teach their children those things, no?). He taught me how to use a jackknife properly and how to pitch a tent. Thinking back on our relationship, both the ups and downs, there was actually more ups than downs, especially during my years in Cubs and again as adults. As adults, we became friends. Not like father-son friends but real friends.

I miss him so much. The last time I saw him, he was doing awesome! We had an excellent time together and even had a beer together at the casino. We did not do any gambling but we had a good time. A few hours prior, Janice, Aislyn and Danika and I visited with him at his place, then dad and I went “out on the town” for a while. That was the first and last time we did that. I should have done that with him more often. It was fun and we both enjoyed it.

Dad, I love you and I always have and always will! I cannot wait to see you again, but until then, keep those engines revved up and your skates sharp. I still want to play some one on one with you.

Love from your son

Marty.

Stacey made a donation to CANADIAN MENTAL HEALTH ASSOCIATION, ALBERTA SOUTH REGION, 19
Dad struggled with mental health for over 20 years. He was supported by a team of professionals who worked tirelessly alongside his family to find and maintain the right balance. It wasn't easy and we all quit at different times during the battle but we made it. My wish is that mental health stops being a taboo subject and that people can freely and openly ask for the help they need. It's not weakness to need a hand, it's strength that allows us to say I need a hand. Dad was humbled by those who fought for him and considered some his biggest allies. Tammy his case worker was so proud of Dad and how far he came in managing his disease. They worked hard together and had a mutual respect that was hard fought. I want to support those who provide hope for the individual most importantly but also to the families. We always knew we could call and find an ear or an opinion. Thank you to the Lethbridge Mental health team for giving us years of smiles and memories with Dad. His grandchildren were direct beneficiaries of your work. We will miss you Dad. See you on the other side :)
