Obituary of Albert Maloney
Albert Bunnis Maloney of Moose Jaw, SK and formerly Mossbank, SK, passed away on May 20, 2015, at the age of 92 years. Albert was born on the family farm near Mossbank on August 31, 1922, to Michael and Mona (nee Powers) Maloney. When World War Two broke out Albert enlisted with the South Saskatchewan regiment and later transferred to the Royal Canadian Corp of Signals. He eventually was promoted to Lance Corporal. Albert landed in Normandy on D-Day+ 12. Throughout the war he sent and received coded messages over his wireless set. He played a significant role in the liberation of France and the Netherlands. After the war ended Albert volunteered for the Muskox Expedition with the army and spent the winter of 1946 driving a bombardier across the Arctic. In 1947, Albert took a job with Hudson Bay Mining and Smelting. He fell in love with the mining industry and stayed in Flin Flon for 35 years. Albert worked 25 years underground and 10 years in the contract office. Albert married Audrey Patterson on January 16, 1953 and they raised two daughters, Patricia and Kathleen. Albert served with many community groups, notably the Legion, Masonic Lodge, Shrine and the Elks. He was a volunteer fire fighter for 25 years and was President of the Mine Recreation Club for many years. Albert coached minor hockey for 25 years and helped many greats get their start. The family faced disaster in 1977, when their home on Church Street was destroyed in a fire. Albert retired on September 30, 1982, and shortly after he and Audrey moved to Mossbank, Saskatchewan. There, Albert worked for the Mossbank and District Municipality as a Pest Control Agent. He also helped with harvest, hauling grain for friends and family. He served on the Mossbank Town Council and continued his volunteer work with the Legion, Masons and Shrine. Albert was an avid card player, especially bridge and cribbage. In August, 2011, Albert decided to move to Moose Jaw. Albert received numerous awards for his community service work and was awarded Life time memberships in both the Masonic Lodge in Flin Flon and Legion Branch #11. Albert had a long, happy, and prosperous life. He touched everyone with his pleasant manner and his helping hands. He soldiered on to the end of his days, and will never be forgotten by anyone that he met. Albert is survived by his loving family, daughter Patricia Streeton, grandson Shawn Streeton (Nicole Zahenaiko), granddaughter Carla Streeton (Nathan Haniak), great grandchildren Cedar and Nova; daughter Kathleen (Ron) Maloney-Buchanan, grandson James Buchanan, granddaughter Laura Buchanan (Michael Plamondon); sister Mearl (Campbell) Smith; sisters-in-law Marion Maloney and Joyce Maloney; and numerous nieces and nephews. Predeceased by his wife Audrey Maloney; son-in-law Bryan Streeton; parents Michael and Mona Maloney; siblings Florence, Frank, James, Edward, William, Wilda, Dorothy, and Mervyn. Funeral Service was held on Tuesday, May 26, 2015, at 1:00 p.m., at the Mossbank United Church. An honour guard was formed by the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #11. Family interment took place at Mossbank Cemetery. Memorial donations in memory of Albert to the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #11, Box 8, Mossbank, SK S0H 3G0, or the Mossbank & District Museum, Box 172, Mossbank, SK S0H 3G0, were greatly appreciated.
