Obituary of Adolph Strauch

Adolph Strauch of Gravelbourg, SK and formerly Shamrock, SK, passed away on August 6, 2015, at the Foyer d’Youville, in Gravelbourg, at the age of 81 years. Adolph was born on the family farm, SW 26-14-06-W3, on September 27, 1933 to Christian and Charlotte Strauch. He was the youngest of 8 children. When Adolph went to school at Bollingbrook he was responsible to light the heater every morning, and he would walk there in his bare feet. Adolph and his brother Dave would go to Alberta and harvest for other people after their harvest was done here. Adolph started dating Doreen Drake in 1953 and they were married November 9, 1956. They would court in the one-ton truck in the summer and horseback in the winter. They were blessed with 5 children, Reginald Adolph, Bradley Edward, Mona Lea, Calvin Kenneth, Kevin Matthew. Adolph was a mixed farmer all his life, first farming with his brothers Alex and Dave, then with Reg for the last half century. Adolph took very good care of his equipment and always had everything clean; he instilled his hard work and pride in all his children and grandchildren. Everyone loved combining season, with a cold beer and great food in the field. Adolph liked to smoke his Colt cigars on the tractor. Rosanne recalls the first time she drank beer with clamato juice, he insisted it was good. He even got his grandkids hooked on the clamato, the bar fridge was always stocked with it. He drove school bus for many years, and was active in the Lions Club. Adolph loved taking his sons Calvin and Kevin to all their hockey games. Boating, camping, fishing and snowmobiling were family favorites. Many trips were made to Sleeping Buffalo Hot Springs with family and friends; this is where Calvin and Kevin learnt to swim. Christmas of 1975 Doreen and Adolph loaded all 7 of their children into the station wagon and headed to Disney Land...and no seat belts! For many years during school spring break Adolph and Doreen would take their grandkids to the Imperial 400 motel in Swift Current for a 2 day sleep over, swimming, water sliding and having fun! They also loved taking the grandkids to the fair in Swift Current each year, making sure to take in the rides, rodeo and parade. Adolph had season tickets for many years to the Swift Current Broncos games and would travel with Art Busch, Jason and Kirby Spasoff and of course his grandsons Justin and Anthony. Adolph spent many hours, days and weeks with Justin and Tony, teaching them to drive at a VERY young age....extending the peddles on the riding lawn mower so Tony could reach and cut grass. The boys spent many hours sleeping on the floor of the tractor, combine, or anywhere their Grandpa was! If Adolph went to sort the mail early in the morning and didn't wake Justin and Tony to come with him, the boys were quite upset. They loved going with him. When Tony had his appendix out and had to stay in the hospital, Adolph came to visit and crawled right into bed with him. Dylan would also love riding around in the equipment when he was visiting. Adolph loved his old country music and would listen to it in his room at the Foyer all the time. He enjoyed when Walter Gehl and his band would come to visit, and was even wanting to dance the last time they were down. Adolph attended church services at the Foyer and at one service in particular everyone was asked what they were Thankful for...Adolph was the first one to raise his hand, and if you knew Adolph as he was a quiet man, this was a surprise, but he wanted to tell everyone he was thankful for his FAMILY. Adolph is survived by his loving family, wife of 58 years Doreen Strauch (nee Drake); son Reg Strauch; son Brad (Rosanne) Strauch; daughter Mona (Amedee) Lorrain; son Calvin (Jackie) Strauch; son Kevin Strauch (Dawn Roberts); grandchildren Jennifer (Trevor) Moss, Dylan Strauch (Danielle Tataryn), Justin (Sarah) Lorrain, Anthony Lorrain (Danielle Harrisson), Justine Lorrain, Teig Strauch, Kenzie Strauch, Melissa Strauch; great grandchildren Julie Moss, Riley Moss, Abigail Lorrain, Isaiah Strauch; brother Dave Strauch, sister Clara Drake; sisters-in-law Anne Strauch, Beatrice Drake. Predeceased by his parents Christian and Charlotte Strauch; siblings Jake Strauch, Mary (George) Harris, Albert (Kay) Strauch, Alex Strauch; father and mother-in-law Reginald and Besse Drake; brothers-in-law Ken (Winnie) Drake, Bruce Drake, Jim (Ruth) Drake, Jack Drake; sister-in-law Evelyn (Robert) Burr. Funeral Service was held on Wednesday, August 12, 2015, at 2:00 p.m., at the Shamrock Community Hall. Officiant was Pastor Bob Langdon. The eulogy was shared by Don Strauch. Readers were Rosanne Strauch and Dawn Roberts. Active pallbearers were Adolph’s grandchildren, Justin Lorrain, Anthony Lorrain, Justine Lorrain, Jennifer Moss, Dylan Strauch and Melissa Strauch. Interment took place at the Shamrock Cemetery. The family would like to thank Dr. Coneys and all the staff at the Foyer d’Youville for the care that Adolph received there during his time there. Memorial donations in memory of Adolph to the Heart and Stroke Foundation, 279 3rd Ave. N., Saskatoon, SK S7K 2H8, were greatly appreciated.
