Obituary of George Joseph Verhelst

George Joseph Verhelst passed away on Monday, September 28, 2015, in Moose Jaw Union Hospital at the age of 89. George was born on the Verhelst Family farm northwest of Meyronne on June 18, 1926. He attended Vindictive Country School. The Verhelst family moved to Lafleche, Saskatchewan in 1948. During his early working years, George farmed and worked at Canada Packers; however, most of his career was spent working at Lafleche Credit Union. Upon George’s retirement, he cared for his wife Ila until her passing in 1992. He continued to spend his retirement years in Assiniboia, gardening, cooking, canning, visiting with friends, and drawing. George was predeceased by his wife Ila (McCarter) Verhelst; parents Victor and Irma Verhelst; siblings Maria J. De Laet, Sr. Agnes Verhelst, Daniel Verhelst, and Alice Verhelst; brothers-in-law Emile De Laet, John Corcoran, and Leo Phaneuf; and sister-in-law Elsie Verhelst. He is survived by siblings Angele Corcoran, Marcel Verhelst, and Esther Phaneuf; and his nephews and nieces. Funeral mass will be celebrated on Friday, October 2, 2015, at 11:00 a.m. at St. George’s Roman Catholic Church in Assiniboia, SK. Interment to follow at Mount Hope Cemetery, Assiniboia, SK. Memorials gratefully received for the Lafleche and District Health Fund Inc. and masses.
