Obituary of Eleanor Sofia Shaw
Eleanor S. Shaw, 83 of Lafleche, SK, passed away January 11th, 2012, at St. Joseph Hospital in Gravelbourg, SK. Eleanor was born on July 11th, 1928 in Limerick, SK, daughter of the late Alice and Herman Hanson. Eleanor attended Valence School for her early education. High school was completed at Melaval, SK, before ultimately obtaining an interim First Class teachers certificate in 1947 in Moose Jaw SK. Eleanor’s first teaching position was at Patriotic School District. Eleanor continued to teach at Montague S.D., Arbuthnot S.D., Meyronne, and Semans. In 1954 Eleanor went to Rouleau, where she enjoyed teaching for nine years. In 1956, after further University courses, Eleanor obtained her Standard teaching certificate. In 1963 Eleanor returned to Wood River and taught at the Woodrow School for six years. Eleanor retired as a superannuated teacher after twenty-one years. Eleanor was a lifetime member of the United Church Women. She was awarded this honour on December 14th, 1988. She was a member of the United Church of Lafleche and faithfully sang in the choir for many years. Eleanor’s generosity and concern for others, was done with humility and serenity. Eleanor loved to garden and shared the produce with others. Her flowers won many awards in horticultural fairs. Eleanor was married to James Shaw on July 19th, 1969.
Survived by Connie Herrick (Donald), Phyllis Hanson (Russell), nieces, nephews and cousins. Predeceased by her husband James Shaw (passed away November 29th, 1985), parents Alice and Herman Hanson, sister Helen Hutchinson (George), brothers Donald Herrick, and Russell Hanson. The family is planning a private graveside service at a later date. In Eleanor’s memory, if you wish, donations could be forwarded to the Canadian Food Grains Bank. Thank you to all the doctors and nursing staff at St. Josephs Hospital for the care during Eleanor’s admission. Thank you to the many family and friends that were able to comfort Eleanor during her hospital admission.
