Obituary of Angus Purdy McIvor

ANGUS PURDY MCIVOR, long time farmer from the Lafleche District, passed away on February 16, 2012, in the Moose Jaw Union Hospital, from a short illness. He was the youngest of 9 children born to Marshall and Helena (Cooke) McIvor. Angus was born on the homestead April 28, 1912; he received his schooling at Gowanlea School and later at Woodrow. As a young boy, his mother and family were very important to him. His love and respect for his mother was unfaltering, even up to her passing in 1977. Being the youngest, his brothers and sisters influenced his life in many special ways. His recollection of these events made for some very proud, embarrassing and humorous stories (always told at family gatherings). In 1944, he went to Shilo, Manitoba, for Basic Training in the Armed Forces but never went over seas. On June 29, 1946, he married Alice Daniels of Meleval. They resided on the Daniels homestead at Meleval before moving to the farmstead close to Winnifred School. Except for 11/2 years when Angus was employed at Trail, BC., he lived his life raising cattle and grain farming. He belonged to the Woodrow Masonic Lodge, United Church of Canada, Meyronne Community Pasture and took interest in numerous organizations in the community. Being an avid curler, he participated in numerous bonspiels in Lafleche and surrounding towns. He won numerous prizes and was involved in an 8-ender in which a plaque and pins were presented by Canada Dry. Angus and Alice were "snow birds” for 25 years spending winters in Mesa, Arizona. Their friends they made there were special and will not be forgotten. They resided in Moose Jaw the last 10 years making a weekly trip to the farm to see the crops and other activities in the area. His coffee shop turned into the Mall in Moose Jaw. Many community members can verify this as sitting for coffee and getting quizzed about the happenings at Lafleche. Angus is predeceased by his parents Marshall and Helena; brothers Elwood (Florence), Edgar (Gladys), Mervin (Ethel), Gordon (Vivienne); sisters Marion (Clarence), Evelyn (Sydney), Dorothy and Eileen (both at infancy). He is survived by his loving family, wife, Alice of 65 years, daughters Glenda and Coreen, son Calvin (Marg); grandchildren Wendy (Dave), Sherry (Derek), Michael (Arlene), Edward (Amy), Shauna, Derinda, Chris (Kim), Chad, (Rachelle), Dustin, (Sharmain) and Craig; great grandchildren Bailey, Holly, Braeden, Connor, Dakota, Alicia, Emily, Tanner, Meagan and Myla and numerous nephews and nieces. Celebration of Life took place Fri., Feb. 24, 2012 at 2:00 p.m. from the Lafleche United Church, with Reverend Linda Tomlinson-Seebach officiant. The Lafleche United Church Choir was accompanied by organist Kay Mitchell. A tribute in memory of Angus was shared by Ken McIvor. Readers were Gloria McIvor and Sharon Huechert. Active pallbearers were Ken McIvor, Murray McIvor, Graeme McIvor, Sterling McIvor, Dan Daniels and Dudley Daniels. Private family interment took place at the Lafleche Municipal Cemetery. A Memorial Tea followed at the Wood River Memorial Hall. Memorial tributes in memory of Angus to the Lafleche & District Curling Club, Box 114, Lafleche, SK S0H 2K0 and the Heart & Stroke Foundation, 279 3rd Ave. N., Saskatoon, SK S7K 2H8, were greatly appreciated. Funeral arrangements entrusted to Piché-Hawkins-Grondin Funeral Chapels, Assiniboia & Gravelbourg.
