Aunt Doris
I am Brad Hawes and Doris was my aunt. As a city kid, I got to spend a lot of time on Doris and Earl’s farm. Essentially every summer and spring break from age 8 till 15 was spent on the farm. I loved it there as there was always something to do and it was truly a fun enviorment.
Most of you have heard my story of Aunt Doris sending me out to whip weeds by hand when I had a high fever of 104 degrees. The truth is she had no idea I was truly sick until I came back in and she took my temperature. She drove me to town faster than I ever seen her drive, she was terrified by the fever and got me in to see Dr. Morin right away, then she nursed me back to health making porridge for me three times a day if I wanted, as she did when I had chicken pox there and migraines etc. She truly cared about all kids.
When I was a teenager my mom said I had to put my laundry in the laundry basket and put it in the laundry room if I wanted her to wash it. Being a teenager of course I did not do as asked and mom, true her word did no laundry for me. Aunt Doris shows up at our house and I ask her to show me how to work the washer and dryer as I had no idea. She said, "I will do your laundry for you” I said thanks but still show me how to work the washer and dryer in case you are not back in two weeks. She did and every time I do laundry I think of her.
She was a great lady, loved and respected by all. I will miss and treasure my memories of her.
PS: With mom, dad, uncle Glenn and now Aunt Doris leaving us in the past two months, there is four of them to play bridge together and we can wait a long time for others to join them…
