Obituary of Elizabeth Evenson

Elizabeth Catherine Evenson (nee Scott) passed away on January 16, 2021.  She was one hundred years old.  Elizabeth was born on October 31, 1920 on the farm near Coronach, Saskatchewan, to Jane and Tom Scott.  Elizabeth was predeceased by her parents, her husband Alvin Evenson in 1986, her daughter Arleen Zahariuk and her son in law Gordon Zahariuk in 2020.  She was predeceased by her brothers Morrison, Lyle, Calder, Laurence and Clayton; her sisters Lillian and Helen.    Elizabeth is survived by her daughter Freda Lawrysyn  (Dennis), her son Delmer Evenson (Lori),  her grandchildren  and their families;   William Lawrysyn (Tracy), Mark Lawrysyn (Tracey), Dan Lawrysyn (Barbara), Deborah Lawrysyn, Kim  Zimmer (Kerry),  Brett Evenson (Kelli), Sara Holinaty (Jodie), Corinne Gibson (Clayton), Grady Zahariuk (Wendy), Lorry  Okraincee (John),  Larry Zahariuk (Jill).  Elizabeth cherished her twenty-six great grandchildren and three great great grandchildren. She will be sadly missed by her many nieces and nephews.

Mom and Dad farmed for years near Bengough; after our father’s death mom continued to live on the farm and rented out the farmland to neighbors.  Later in life she sold the farm, finally settling in Assiniboia with her last few years living in Prairie Villa Retirement Home.

Our mother loved to dance, she curled for many years, she excelled at playing Checkers, Hearts and Cribbage and crocheting many tablecloths and doilies.  She read hundreds of books, even through failing eyesight, it was a challenge to provide her with the books (especially Westerns) that she loved to read.   Mom received her driver’s license at the age of 65 years, and she attempted downhill skiing at the age of 67.  She travelled to Hawaii and throughout the United States, Mexico and across Canada    She had tremendous cooking skills, making bread, lefse and her famous chicken and dumplings.  All of her grandchildren remember the special holidays at the farm, playing games, riding ponies, coyote hunting with grandpa and coming home to a delicious supper.

She was an intelligent lady who could remember everything.  The family would like to send a special thank you to the good friends and neighbors who supported mom throughout her life.  Thank you to the staff at Prairie Villa and to the Palliative Care Team at the Assiniboia Union Hospital for their excellent care.
