Maisie Mabillia Appleton (Higham) Hanna, S.V.M
Born June 1, 1923, Mazenod, SK; died December 21, 2014, Regina, Sk. Predeceased by brother
Bob, sisters Betty (Fred) Brooks and Marjorie (Henry) Mitchell, husband Garnet. Survived by
brothers John (Barney) Higham and George (Jean) Higham, daughter Margaret (Roger Clayton),
son Richard, and many nieces, nephews, and grand nieces and nephews. She was a bundle of
energy who lit up the lives of all around her with her love and laughter. She created beauty
through her gardening, quilting, embroidery and sewing, and showered friends and family with her
creations. She endeavored to improve the lives of rural women everywhere through her many
positions with the Saskatchewan Homemakers’ Club, the Saskatchewan Women’s Institute,
Creating Prairie Cronies, Network of Older Women and Intercultural Grandmothers Uniting. She
was awarded the Saskatchewan Volunteer Medal in 2014 in recognition of her more than 60 years
of volunteer work. Our thanks to the wonderful staff at The Bentley on Hillsdale, Dove House,
and Pasqua Hospital Ward 4A for all the care and love they extended to Mom during her last
years. A memorial service will be held in the spring; date and place will be announced later. Donations in Maisie’s honour may be made to the Intercultural Grandmothers Uniting in care of the University of
Regina.
